Since 2009, the Allstate/National Journal Heartland Monitor Poll series has given voice to Americans’ anxieties about the economy and expectations for the future. Through the Heartland Monitor research and events held in Washington, D.C. and outside the Beltway, Allstate has engaged with opinion leaders in a constructive dialogue aimed at working towards solutions and continuing Allstate’s legacy of commitment to making lives safer and more secure.

The tenth installment of the Allstate/National Journal Heartland Monitor Poll is focused on the topic “Balancing Act.” The survey explores Americans’ opinions about private and public debt, including an investigation into how Americans are handling their personal debt situation during the economic downturn, and an inquiry into Americans’ views on the federal debt and deficit.

The poll also explores the longitudinal themes that have evolved throughout the poll series, including a lingering pessimism regarding the direction of the country and state of the economy. As we see through the poll opinions and Man-on-the-Street interviews, Americans remain resolute in their optimism that America is the land of opportunity.

The Stories from the Heartland website is a forum to capture and share our research-driven insights and to give voice to Americans’ perceptions and concerns. By convening this dialogue, we hope to facilitate a broader discussion, which goes beyond the numbers to inspire solutions to the economic challenges that all Americans face.
